I've been ITB as far as plugins go for the most part, and they've done me well. If my music brought in more money than I spend on it, I'd go with some nice EQ and a couple very slick dynamics units. Then you will just have a box of silicon and memories.Īctual mastering hardware is forever.

Your current plugs may work until the next forced upgrade. So the lesson there for me is to not get too invested in UAD.

The only consolation was crossgrade to certain versions of plugins for Pro Tools people, and I think there was some standalone Virus as well. But then I woke up to a 'regret to inform you ' email one day. And more than once a ground hum showed up to ruin the party. When I did used to round trip through my analog eq and dynamics (White EQ and DBX 166 ) There was always some noise added.

Until I can afford much better converters I prefer to stay in the digital domain until final delivery.Īn added plus of using virtual dynamics and EQ is that you do not add noise! I'm 100% into mastering with the UAD stuff and a few other plugins.

I guess my question is, out of these 3 options, what have you all ended up with? Were you happy with one over the other or did you go back and forth? Ultimately I want to understand if 500 series modules tend to be the "lite" versions of some of these preamps, compressors, EQs, etc or if they're just a more ergonomic version of their rack bretheren. A little might go a long way, I don't need a bunch of different compressors and EQs (just one of each with a lot of versatility and go from there, looking at an Avalon VT747 and some Overstayer compression) Of course this seems to be least desirable since it will take up the most space, cost significantly more than the other 2 options, but perhaps there is something superior to owning a genuine rack EQ and compressor over the 500 series versions of these.

Having everything inside the computer really distracts me from the process, if I spent a month getting my signal chain set up properly and making some kind of MIDI mapping to a controller it might not be as tedious to me, but if I bought into UAD again I probably would not take advantage of the mastering modules too much (plus buying new plugins can get costly).Īs these things go, there is of course a third option, abet the most expensive, but I could slowly acquire some core pieces of mastering gear and just have them in a full rack space and be very happy with myself. I've owned an Apollo Duo rack before and thought it sounded awesome, gave me lots of routing options, but I honestly never touched any of the virtual modules. Now, I'm sort of in the market for a new interface (I love my MOTU Ultralite mk3 but it doesn't seem to get along with Windows 10). However, you can get a lot of these modules and add these elements to your mastering chain virtually with a Universal Audio interface. Investing in a rack is the first step, a little costly, but I'm kind of debating adding some 500 series goodness to the studio. Whereas I was previously under the impression I'd be spending $800-$1200 per module, I'm a little more keen on it now that I see some of the lower cost options available on the market. I've always had GAS over 500 series racks, really great space saving design coupled with a lot of variety in mastering modules. Got into a conversation with a friend of mine a few months back where he informed me that there are a fair amount of good 500 series DIY projects out there.
